Abstract

The purpose of this project is to increase understanding of racially covenanted properties in Fredericksburg, Virginia, during the early twentieth century. This is done by creating an on-line interactive map showing what land had racial covenants placed on deeds before the practice became illegal in 1968. In addition, a website is created to house this map and provide additional historical information on the subdivisions in which racial covenants were found. It is the beginning of a multi-year project; this part focuses on the neighborhoods of Fairview, Hanover Heights, College Terrace, and Kenmore Division, while also showing contemporaneous Black property ownership.
